The new locking mechanism indeed seems to be more convenient to use, as the lever arm is always accessible no matter if the protective grid is opened or closed. It also appears to be more solid. I hope that they didn’t have any issues with the robustness of the old version, which I will receive shortly.

The downside of the new version in my opinion clearly is the removal of the safety feature. I assume it should be quite easy to remove the interlock from the old version if it annoys you.
At least this is the case with other spiral mixers. You just need to open the top cover, unplug the sensor and bridge the cables.
Whereas it will most likely be very challenging to retrofit an interlock to the new version.
