I usually start with a (weak) magnet test. Stainless should be either non-magnetic or partially magnetic. If the magnet sticks hard (like to a known steel item), then the metal is might be plated, painted, or something similar.

Also, based on the diagram from the website, compare the inside surface to the outside surface. Significant differences may provide a clue.

Note: There are magnetic stainless alloys, but I wouldn’t expect to see them in this application.
